Lagomorphs
These are small herbivores with rabbits and hares representing the Lepus family in Devon. Neither are indigenous to Britain, but have become naturalised over many centuries. They are adapted to the lifestyle of a prey species. Characterised by long ears and hind legs and feet their escape strategy from many predators is to flee fast!
Brown Hare
Open habitat - particularly mixed farmland where there are woods, hedges and shelterbelts offering cover when resting. The UK records show a serious decline in numbers since the 1960s, but it is still locally common in some areas of Devon (though it is unclear whether it is still in decline generally in the county. Now rarely seen in some parts (e.g. Dartmoor). The hare has been the subject of a number of special surveys - but there is still more to discover.
Rabbit
Open grassland with woodland, hedgerow or dense scrub nearby for cover. Very common and widespread across Devon and is another very common species which is extremely under-recorded.
